Lyceum Restoration Levy
The Lyceum opened in 1897 and is a Grade II* listed building. During its history it has significant periods of refurbishment which secured the longevity of the theatre to today. The last major refurbishment was in 2014.
We want to be transparent that maintaining a Grade II* listed building comes with significant investment. We regularly ask you for your feedback and you give us lots of information on improvements you’d like to see. To move beyond maintenance and into enhancing your experience, these initiatives require specific funding.
For bookings made from 11 October 2025, we are introducing a restoration levy.
FAQs
What is a restoration levy?
A restoration levy is a small additional charge added to each ticket, which is ring-fenced for investment in the theatre. When booking through this website you will see (+£1 CMSN) listed next to the ticket price.
100% of the restoration levy will go towards the refurbishment, improvement and upkeep of the theatre, safeguarding it for the future.
Why is a restoration levy needed?
The Lyceum is a magnificent Grade II* listed building that provides an ornate backdrop to the very best productions touring the UK, and it is over 100 years old. Investment is required to ensure Sheffield’s facilities are modernised, updated and safeguarded for the future. It’s important that your experience is maintained at a high level and the levy helps us to do that.
Where will this restoration levy be spent?
All the money raised from the levy will be spent on maintaining the Lyceum. We will update this page with developments made as a result of the levy.
How is this different to the ticket income you receive?
The Lyceum receives shows that are touring the UK and are produced by other companies. The majority of the ticket price goes towards producing the show, with Sheffield Theatres receiving a small proportion.
Our small share of ticket income balances the operating costs of the theatre to present the show including staffing, electricity and heating.
This levy helps us to look after the building.
When will you start charging a restoration levy?
From 11 October 2025, the levy will be applied to tickets for Lyceum shows, except for tickets priced £15 and under.
Do I have to pay a restoration levy?
Yes, unless you purchase a £15 ticket or under.
Will the restoration levy be added to tickets already purchased?
No, all tickets purchased before 11 October 2025 are not affected by the restoration levy.
How long will this levy be in place?
We will continue to raise funds through the Lyceum restoration levy until a time where we no longer need to enhance the building.
