We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Gill. One of the UK’s most prominent writers and directors, he directed over a hundred productions in the UK, Europe and North America.

In 2002, a festival of his work brought his plays and a number of leading artists to Sheffield Theatres’ stages, with direction by Josie Rourke, Paul Miller, Rufus Norris and Peter himself. His work in Sheffield also included: the premiere of Original Sin, directed by Gill and starring Andrew Scott in the underworld of London and Paris in the 1890s; Uncle Vanya, Gill’s adaptation of the Chekhov classic directed by Tamara Harvey and in co-production with Theatre Clwyd; and the revival of his play The York Realist, directed by Sheffield Theatres’ former artistic director Robert Hastie in 2018, starring Ben Batt and Jonathan Bailey in a love story between two men on a 1960s rural Yorkshire farmstead.

His contribution to theatre on our stages has been cherished by so many, and our thoughts are with his family at this time.
