Counting Sheepsbegins the autumn season, playing on Wednesday 3 September. Two sheep think they know everything about sleep - they’re experts in the field, but tonight they’re wide awake. Snuggle up and join two sheep on a journey through the joys and frustrations of everything bedtime. A touching, musical adventure filled with sensory play for 0-3 year olds and their (very tired) grown-ups.
Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe, running Friday 5 – Saturday 6 September, Dear Young Monster is Pete MacHale’s debut solo show. Struggling at the beginning of his medical transition, a young trans man has dropped out of university and returned to his quiet hometown. His friends are away, the locals are becoming increasingly hostile, his body is transforming before his very eyes and it’s all becoming too much... Until he catches a midnight screening of Frankenstein. At last, he feels seen. Pulling apart fear, otherness, Dear Young Monster explores what it means to embrace being the monster that the world keeps telling you that you are. Produced with support from Bristol Old Vic.
As part of their 30th anniversary season, New Earth Theatre collaborated with seven venues across the country to explore and embrace ESEA and British performance culture in the here-and-now. Twisted Roots Festival celebrates British East and Southeast Asian arts heritage in the modern theatre landscape. On Tuesday 9 - Wednesday 10 September, enjoy a night of work-in-progress pieces, fusing western theatre styles with Filipino dance, Chinese paper cutting and Rakugo comedy.
On Saturday 13 September, award-winning Estonian clown Julia Masli presents her critically acclaimed show ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Having been nominated Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2023, Best Show at Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023 and Nominated Most Innovative Show at The Offies 2025. it's now Sheffield's turn to enjoy this "strange and beautiful masterpiece" (Telegraph).
A Roots Mbili Theatre production, originally co-produced with Sheffield Theatres,Far Gonereturns to the Playhouse from Wednesday 17 – Saturday 20 September for five homecoming performances that kick-start its global tour to America, Taiwan and South Africa. When Okumu’s village in Northern Uganda is attacked by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), he and his brother’s lives are changed forever. Inspired by John Rwothomack’s own real-life experience of nearly being kidnapped by the LRA aged eight, Far Gone is a heart-breaking story of a young boy’s journey from childhood innocence to child soldier. Told with humour, poetry, and startling physical theatre, Okumu’s experience strikes straight at the heart through a powerful one-man performance.
1980s Sheffield, Thatcher’s Britain: politics, passion, protest... where anything might happen and usually does. Gwenda’s Garage is a fabulous new musical, created by Out Of The Archive in association with Sheffield Theatres, is an exuberant call to arms, fired by fun, feminism, friendship, above all an affirming belief in the power of collective action. Three female mechanics set up their own garage in a run-down area of the city, naming it after Gwenda Stewart, a pioneering racing driver, and begin dismantling the patriarchy - one spark plug at a time. From Wednesday 15 – Saturday 25 October.
