Title: Production Management Trainee

Hours: 273 hours over the traineeship. Start and finish times will vary.

Duration: This is a fixed-term PAYE post from 1 October to 3 December (2 months) part-funded by the Stage Door 11 programme with Good Chance. The number of days per week will vary from 2 to 5 to be decided by the Supervisor, the total number of days across the contract is 39.

Salary: £13.45 per hour. Approximate monthly salary before deductions is £1,836.

Location: This role is open to candidates based in South Yorkshire. The post holder will work on site at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

Line Manager: Creative Development Director

Supervisor(s): Technical Director, Production Manager

Key Working Relationships: Technical Manager, Head of Company Management, Production & Technical Teams, Visiting Companies and Creative Teams.

Production Management

• Support the Production Manager in the planning and delivery of productions and events.

• Assist in maintaining production schedules and production paperwork.

• Attend production meetings and support the tracking of actions.

• Assist with communication between creative, production and technical teams.

• Support rehearsal, technical rehearsal and performance logistics.

• Assist with sourcing, tracking and organising production resources as required.

Technical & Production

• Work alongside Production and Technical teams to develop an understanding of their functions and responsibilities.

• Observe and support activity across departments including lighting, sound, stage, workshop, wardrobe, company management and stage management.

• Assist with fit-ups, get-ins, rehearsal support, technical rehearsals, and performance activity where appropriate.

• Develop an understanding of production planning, budgeting, scheduling and health and safety practices within a producing theatre.

Professional Development

• Participate fully in training, mentoring and learning opportunities.

• Seek and act on feedback throughout the traineeship.

• Contribute positively to an inclusive, collaborative and professional working culture.

This traineeship is offered as a professional development opportunity open specifically to people from a refugee or asylum seeking background with lived experience of forced displacement.

We are looking for somebody who already has some experience of working in a production, technical or backstage capacity, and who is excited to continue developing these skills within a supportive professional environment.

Essential criteria:

• You do not need extensive experience to apply, but we do ask that candidates have some experience in Production Management and/or Technical Theatre. This could be in a professional capacity, through university placements or independent projects.

• Passionate about theatre and live performance.

• Strong organisational and communication skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

• Enthusiastic, proactive and willing to learn.

• Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable criteria:

• Flexibility with work hours- adaptable to afternoon and evening work patterns along with standard daytime hours.

• Experience in using Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) as well as Microsoft Teams.

• An understanding of stagecraft carpentry, lighting, and sound.

• Knowledge of safe working practices, risk assessments.

Stage Door is Good Chance Theatre’s flagship programme dedicated to creating bespoke paid trainee opportunities for creatives from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds.

The programme celebrates and nurtures creative industry professionals while addressing the imbalance of opportunities available to people who have been displaced.

Following the incredible success of Stage Door 10, this traineeship forms part of the development of a new cohort: Stage Door 11. This year, the programme will see 11 traineeships rolled out across the country.

As part of Stage Door 11 the Production Management trainee will receive a series of one-to-one wellbeing sessions with Good Chance’s Deputy Artistic Director. They will also become part of a cohort of 11 trainees coming together to benefit from networking opportunities, skills development sessions, and masterclasses delivered by Good Chance.

Towards the end of their placement, the trainee will also receive three mentoring sessions from a member of the Shubbak team, supporting them as they reflect on their experience and consider their next steps within the theatre industry.
