We believe the arts offer a unique opportunity to support people living with Dementia. Research has shown that music activities help access the creative part of the brain, which can override the stresses of memory loss, elevate mood and restore a sense of personal identity.
We are proud to be a Dementia Friendly organisation and offer a programme of activities that is both therapeutic to those living with Dementia and creates a chance for them and their families to interact socially, rather than focusing on symptoms, diagnosis or illness; improving quality of life and reducing isolation.
From training our actors to become Dementia Friends, to offering free singing workshops and hosting a Dementia Friendly performance of our Christmas musical, Sheffield Theatres aims to support people living with Dementia to experience the joy of live theatre.
As part of our regular programme, we host a monthly Dementia Friendly Tea Dance which is bookable through the Box Office. The next Dementia Friendly Tea Dances will be held on Tuesday 20 November, Tue 18 December and Tue 8 January. We also have Dementia Friendly performance for Kiss Me, Kate on Thu 3 January at 2.15pm.
For information or to book please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0114 249 6000.
We are grateful to our supporters, whose donations enable us to bring joy to more people living with Dementia. To support this strand of our work please visit the Donate Now page.
What to expect from a Dementia Friendly performance
Our Dementia Friendly performances are highlighted with the code DF when you are looking in the brochure or online.
We want to ensure that the experience of vising Sheffield Theatres is truly enjoyable and supportive. For a Dementia Friendly performance, we consult with people living with Dementia and the people who support them, to create the best possible environment to enjoy the show.
The show itself is adapted (where necessary) in terms of lighting, sound and occasionally stage action. The details of a specific production can be discussed when you make your booking. We offer flexibility when booking seats to allow a little more space if needed and all of our Box Office team are trained Dementia Friends.
We also offer pre-show singing sessions to help prepare people for the show!
On the day, our fully trained staff team and volunteers are on hand to guide you and provide additional support if needed. In the auditorium, there is a relaxed attitude to movement and audience responses. An accessible quiet room outside the auditorium is also available for anyone who wants to take some time away from the show.
For more information, please contact the Box Office on 0114 249 6000.
