MAHLER Piano Quartet in A minor

WAGNER Siegfried Idyll

MAHLER Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (arr. Eisler and Stein for Baritone and Chamber Ensemble)

An evening of intense Romantic harmonies. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was composed as a private birthday offering to his wife and was first performed on a staircase at the family home on Christmas morning – six years later, themes from the Idyll were woven into the epic opera Siegfried. Mahler’s own poems for Songs of a Wayfarer reveal the emotional aftermath of a failed romance that left the young composer in abject despair.

Concert generously supported by James and Angela Kellie.

Presented by Music in the Round, as part of Sheffield Chamber Music Festival 2018
