Energy and vitality counteract a degree of poignancy in this concert. Debussy’s Violin Sonata was the composer’s last completed work and the premiere in 1917 was his final performance. It’s a restless piece with the 'breathlessness of a mortally wounded bird, which has a beauty and pathos of its own.'* Ravel’s Violin and Cello Sonata was dedicated to the memory of Debussy and its relentless drive makes it an arresting homage.
