Experience the Crucible in Virtual Reality

Audiences are being given the opportunity to experience the iconic Crucible stage like never before with help from Sheffield-based tech companies.

During the run of The Wizard of Oz, Sheffield Theatres recorded a 360 degree video of the cast of the show taking their bow and the audience applauding and cheering at the end of a performance, to allow everyone the chance to experience being on the iconic stage.

Ben Carlin, Artistic Director of Sheffield-based Epiphany VR, which fuses virtual reality with the arts, was brought in to record and edit the video, with help from graduates from Sheffield Hallam University – where Carlin also teaches – who run 3D design company Cosmic Monacle and became involved to create animation for the video for audiences to also experience being inside the ‘twister’.

This project has life beyond The Wizard of Oz, as there are plans for the piece to be used in teaching Digital Media Production course at Hallam University.

During the final week of The Wizard of Oz, Sheffield Theatres will work with Hallam University students to host demonstrations with audiences ahead of them seeing the show. Official Gear VR headsets will be brought in to enable those watching to receive an optimum experience.

The Wizard of Oz in Virtual Reality is available to watch now on Sheffield Theatres’ YouTube site here.

The Wizard of Oz runs until Saturday 20 January.
