Fun Palaces

Join us this October when we throw our doors open for a fantastic day of family fun and activities!

We’ve partnered with Pitsmoor Playground, Nyara Arts and Sheffield Science Outreach to create this year's brilliant fun palaces programme of activities. Explore the spooky history of the Lyceum in our ghost tours, help us build a ‘Fun Palace’ out of recycled material, learn all about immunity in our interactive science talks, try your hand at African Storytelling in our immersive workshops and much, much more!

Best of all, every event is free! Some require pre-booking, but there is plenty to do if you just want to turn up on the day

Look below for the full list of events at this year’s Fun Palace.

Make a Bee House

Have fun making a bee or small insect house from recycled materials to take home with you. Hang in your garden or local green space and help to look after our native wildlife.

Meet the Beekeeper

Green Estate’s resident bee keeper will be joining us to share her work, raising awareness of the importance of bee conservation and bringing samples of delicious locally produced honey to taste. Take a look at the tools and frames used and try on a bee keeper suit!

Green Estates is a not for profit social enterprise working in the Manor & Castle wards of Sheffield since 1998.

Create a Panto Collage

Help us to make a pantomime themed collage mural for display in the Crucible. Get creative and add your favourite colourful characters – think wizards and fairies, heroes and villains, magical pumpkins and carriages! Learn the art of collage paper craft while helping to make something beautiful. If you have old comics and magazines that we can cut pictures from then please bring along.

Nyara Studio Takeover

Experience an exciting mystical journey, exploring ancient African Kingdoms, culture and legends in our pop-up Akiti Village. Join Sesanya the Soothsayer and The Old African played by guest artist Tixxy Bang to bring old folk tales to life through music, dance and immersive storytelling. You'll leave feeling royal and a little more magical! The three workshops on the day will be:

  • Tohazie The Red Hunter
  • Mama Dinga and the Well
  • The Creation of Ile Ife

Adventure Playground

Join us to jump, climb, build, leap, roll, skip and shout as PitsmoorAdventure Playground transform the foyer in to a playground to explore and enjoy for the day! Serious play on an epic scale, don’t miss it.

Building Sheffield People’s Palace

Have fun creating and designing a model palace inspired by the grandeur of imperial residences, royal retreats and palaces from around the world! We’ll be using our imaginations to create a uniquely Sheffield Palace, exploring architectural features and styles, learning new ways of making and constructing, using a wide range of different materials.

Fun Palaces Beauty Lab

Learn how to make your own beauty products from scratch, being inventive and finding new creative uses for kitchen cupboard ingredients! Make and take home to enjoy lip scrubs, bath bombs and hair masks in this hands-on workshop.

Lucky Goldfish Ornaments

Find out about Chinese tradition and customs while making your own beautiful paper craft ornament to take home, known to symbolize good luck.

Basketball Challenge

Enter our basketball shoot-out to learn your jump from your hook shots and have a go at playing H.O.R.S.E with our very own Sheffield Theatres (amateur…) basketball squad. Prizes to be won!

Science Takeover

Explore, discover and experiment in our pop-up science lab, hosted by the Sheffield Science Outreach team of volunteers. With a host of activities focused around the theme of immunity and our bodies natural defence systems, there will be plenty for those with an inquisitive mind and curious nature to join in with, through hands-on learning and having fun.
