Based on Eva’s experiences of being a big(ger?) woman in the entertainment industry, this one-performer show explores how Eva has used humour and comedy to make room for herself in a world that’s historically been too small for her and others like her. But the laughter can sometimes mask the cost this coping mechanism has on her own self-worth.
We meet Eva backstage while she waits in a dressing room as someone, somewhere tries to find a costume that will fit her before she’s needed onstage.
As she waits, Eva guides the audience through her story with the help of visitations from big funny women of the past: Tessie O’Shea, Hattie Jacques, and Victoria Wood. Traversing the worlds of music hall, variety, stand-up, and farce, Eva pays homage to the women who came before her, who broke the mould and let out the seams.
But as time ticks apace and Eva is left costume-less, she starts to wonder, what happens if the laughter stops?
