In 1934, a group of Ashington Miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint.
This humourous and deeply moving play by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, Cooking with Elvis) arrives in Sheffield following sell-out seasons at Live Theatre, Newcastle and the National Theatre.
Winner of Best New Play at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2008.
'A wonderful piece of theatre: comic, sad and stirring in the same breath.' Financial Times
'Inspired, witty, serious and humbling...feisty writing and astonishingly fine performances. The best new play of the year so far.' Mail on Sunday
'A beautiful work of art that everybody should see.' The Times
