The Romans in Britain opens this week...

Be the first to see...
THE ROMANS IN BRITAIN
By Howard Brenton
Directed by Samuel West

Crucible Theatre

54BC and the villages north of the Thames live under an uneasy truce. There are rumours, whispers in the air, of an army approaching. The Romans are in Britain and Julius Caesar has little time for the locals. Centuries later another army blunders its way through another foreign country. As a British officer turned assassin loses his mind in Ireland, the weight of history bears down on him...

A breathtaking, epic production, Howard Brenton's darkly comic play questions the bloody and barbaric effects of expanding empires. Brutal, but gripping, this is the first major revival of The Romans in Britain since its National Theatre premiere in 1980. It also marks the Crucible directorial debut of Sheffield Theatres Artistic Director, Samuel West:

"The Romans In Britain shows us the British people both as invaders and invaded, depicting the sometimes brutal consequences of these dual roles with rare humanity, wit and sensitivity. We feel that it is a play for our times and that it should be seen."
