Royal to re-open Crucible theatre

HRH The Earl of Wessex will officially be re-opening the newly refurbished Sheffield Crucible Theatre on Thursday 18 February 2010.

At the ceremony HRH The Earl of Wessex will tour the theatre’s new facilities, meet Sheffield Theatres’ Board of Directors, current theatre employees and staff involved in the redevelopment project.  Internationally famous for hosting the World Snooker Championships, the Crucible will also welcome Stephen Hendry to the event. Hendry who has won the championships six times will also have the opportunity to meet HRH The Earl of Wessex before he is invited to watch an exclusive rehearsal on the newly built stage.  This will be with Artistic Director Daniel Evans and the company of new Sheffield Theatres production An Enemy of the People starring Sir Antony Sher.

The Crucible has been transformed following its £15.3 million redevelopment programme. The new theatre has seen many changes, including a completely refurbished auditorium with a brand new thrust stage and new seating; new front of house areas with a new Box Office and remodeled bar area; improved accessibility for disabled users with a lift to all floors and more wheelchair spaces in the auditorium; a new function room overlooking Tudor Square; upgraded and improved dressing rooms and offices; new technical equipment and an enhanced Studio theatre with brand new removable seating.

Dan Bates, Chief Executive for Sheffield Theatres, said: “The re-opening of the Crucible is a major boost for the city and the region.  We are absolutely delighted to have the Earl of Wessex with us to celebrate the official re-opening.  Now re-open, the theatre will once again be of huge benefit to the public with an excellent set of new facilities and new programme of dynamic and exciting work”.
