Presented at Lyceum
Running time: 2 hours 20 mins (including an interval of 20 mins)
Haunting, funny, poignant and full of mystery, Daytona is a play with not one but two love stories at its heart.
Happy in their shared passion for ballroom dancing, Joe and Elli plan to win the next big competition. But the unexpected arrival of a figure from their past threatens to throw everything off balance. What can this man possibly want of them on this cold winter’s night? What can be gained from this uneasy reunion?
When they discover the story behind his sudden return, Joe and Elli must confront a profound moral dilemma.
Daytona stars Maureen Lipman, one of this country’s best-loved actresses. Her theatre appearances include Re: Joyce! and the Olivier award-nominated Glorious! in the West End. Daytona also stars Harry Shearer, famous for providing character voices for The Simpsons and the 1984 mockumentary This is Spinal Tap. John Bowe also stars, following his recent appearance as Judge Turpin in the Olivier award-winning Sweeney Todd in the West End.

‘Maureen Lipman is utterly mesmerising’ 4 stars
‘Oliver Cotton’s new play finds the much-loved Maureen Lipman in first-rate form. It is a gripping story, powerfully told and excellently performed’ 4 stars
‘Oliver Cotton’s new play is a dazzling showcase for a trio of fine actors: Maureen Lipman, John Bowe and Harry Shearer. Director David Grindley offers extraordinary, animating moments to remember’ 4 stars
‘This is a compelling and deeply humane production and one I warmly recommend’ 4 stars
‘Compelling. Maureen Lipman and Harry Shearer are stars on top form. John Bowe almost steals the show – he’s a pleasure to watch.’ 4 stars
‘A profoundly, powerful moving play’ 5 stars
‘Maureen Lipman’s droll delivery is a masterwork in understated acting but she also knows when to let rip, whereas Harry Shearer is a calm, pragmatic counterpart to both her and John Bowe’s wild-eyed storyteller. Oliver Cotton has a gift for fusing those humorous, everyday trivialities with the fantastical – and making the most unbelievable story seem real.’
‘Oliver Cotton’s Daytona is a dynamo of a piece made TRIUMPHANT by its stellar cast. The meaty plot and sharp, witty dialogue make for a poignant drama, and David Grindley’s production is top notch in bringing it to life. Maureen Lipman, Harry Shearer and John Bowe create an intricate dynamic and master the demands of Cotton’s script to perfection.’
