Lighting

The Lighting Designer for The Tempest is Hartley T A Kemp. His job is to design the lighting for the production, decide on the types of lanterns he will use, provide a full lighting plan for the technicians to rig before the technical rehearsal and choose the colours for each lantern. He will work very closely with the director to decide on the effects and placing of scenes on the set. He will also plot all the lighting states with the director before the technical rehearsal starts. During the technical rehearsal Hartley will also work closely with Gary Longfield, the Crucible Chief Electrician, to further modify and adapt the design as required.

Michael: The production is all in continuous time and we are on a bright sunny island. Creating a sense of a big, open, sunlit island, a world of heat, but one that can dramatically change, a framework from which we can create extraordinary moments for lighting changes is something Hartley Kemp excels at.

Notes from the Director's storyboard (written July 2002)

Scene 6 (Act 3 scene 2)
First scene after the interval.
The scene starts with Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo singing themselves onto the beach. The scene will probably be played out in the central area downstage of the proscenium. The lighting of this scene should create a very hot and sunny beach scene.
