Derek Jacobi plays Prospero, an exiled Duke with supernatural powers who orchestrates his daughter Miranda's first contact with other mortals. After 12 years of exile on an enchanted island, Prospero has the chance to punish the brother who wronged him. The Tempest is a remarkable study of betrayal, forgiveness and compassion. This is Shakespeare's final play, and Prospero's climatic final speech is interpreted by many as the writer's own farewell to the theatre.

Jacobi, one of Britain's most familiar actors, brings his own brand of intensity to the character of the embittered wizard. Though he is most famous for TV roles including Cadfael and I, Claudius, he also has a glittering theatre CV, having worked extensively with the RSC and the National.

Jacobi will be joined by Olivier Award winner Daniel Evans, who will play the sprightly Ariel in a production directed by Michael Grandage. The show has transfered to the Old Vic after a successful run at Sheffield Crucible in Autumn 2002.
