The Elephant Man

Welcome to online Insight for
The Elephant Man
by Bernard Pomerance

This Insight has been designed to enhance your enjoyment of our current production of The Elephant Man

‘Illusion and reality’ is one of the main themes of the play and with this in mind we have endeavoured to put the play into context by comparing  Pomerance’s portrayal of the main characters with their ‘true’ histories.

We have also included some information on life in the 1800’s to put Joseph (John) Merrick’s story in context.

The Elephant Man Insight also looks at the writer, the style, themes and characters of play.

Sarah Clough, Education Officer, has also interviewed members of company to find out how they have approached their role in Sheffield Theatre's Production of The Elephant
Man.
Sarah has also produced insights into: Brecht's 'alilenation effect' in relation to The Elephant Man, and on performing on a raked stage.
