Production History

1979

First production of Amadeus at the National theatre, directed by Sire Peter Hall.  Ran for over 1000 performances in London.  The production won the Evening Standard’s Drama Award.  Audiences queued for tickets one year after its premiere.

1980

Shaffer revised the play extensively before it opened on Broadway, winning five Tony awards.

1984

A film version of Amadeus, directed by Milos Forman is released.  Shaffer wrote the screenplay.  The film won 8 academy awards.

1997

Amadeus is produced at the Stratford Festival Theatre in Ontario with the fourth version of the last encounter.

1998

Shaffer re writes the final encounter for a fifth time for the play’s revival at the Old Vic in London and further makes further revisions when the play is transferred to Broadway.
