Sheffield Theatres are embarking upon an exciting new project that aims to look at the personal journeys of the people and places within Sheffield, gathering various stories from community groups and individuals within the city.

The project aims to explore the personal and cultural heritage unique to these stories, and the interface this makes with the changing nature of the city itself. Stories will be gathered by interview as well as through creative mediums. There will be an ongoing creative process through which professional practitioners from a broad spectrum of the Performing Arts will be working with the local communities to develop performances, creative writings, music and visual arts based on the stories collected as stimulus.

All of the research and work that will be produced over the project will culminate in a celebration day, in which all individuals and community groups will be invited to see how their stories have contributed to the final sharing and performance. The project will draw together the Oral Histories gathered over this period in the form of a book.

Sheffield Theatres will also utilise the material as a stimulus for creating a new piece of Theatre for Schools and families to be toured in March 2009.

We are currently looking to work with various groups or individuals willing to share stories of their ‘Journey to the city’ to become part of the project. If you or your group would be interested, please contact Emily Hutchinson on 0114 2495999 or email Emily at:

Bus Journey Journals

Isn’t it amazing the experiences you can have on such a short Journey!

People watching, taking in the surroundings behind a pane of sticky fingered glass. The silence of a journey, or the noisy chatter of friends; hearing about what she said and he said and what they did there, who’s in and what’s what, and the chorus from the back of the bus not too dissimilar to Catherine Tate’s teenager, “is itttttttttttttt!”. All to the soundtrack of the latest ‘tune’ on ya mobile!

But what would the Journey be without the characters that make up Sheffield and the places that make up the lives!

These little snippets of bus life captured after a hard day’s work, or in the hustle and bustle of the morning crowd have provided a quirky insight into the everyday Journeys on our City’s transport.
