Sheffield Theatres searches for 20 Tiny Plays About Sheffield

Sheffield Theatres is looking for local people to take part in their next large-scale theatre production, 20 Tiny Plays About Sheffield, which will take to the Crucible Studio stage in April 2013.

Directed by Sheffield Theatres’ Creative Producer, Andrew Loretto (LeanerFasterStronger, Lives in Art), 20 Tiny Plays About Sheffield is a new production that will bring together twenty new, five-minute plays exploring perceptions of Sheffield in the 21st Century. Sheffield Theatres is seeking short play submissions from local and UK-based writers aged 12 years old and over. The play must be an original piece of work written for the stage and last no longer than five minutes. It can be of any genre and can cover any modern experience or insight into Sheffield, for example cultural identity, redevelopment or new technology in the city. The plays can be written for small or large casts of mixed ages.

Sheffield Theatres is also looking for local people aged from 12 years old upwards to stage and perform the plays as part of Sheffield People’s Theatre, a community ensemble for local people and artists in Sheffield. There are numerous areas to get involved in including acting, directing, design, lighting, sound, music, video and stage management and all participants will receive training and guidance from a team of theatre professionals and artists throughout the project.

Sheffield Theatres’ Creative Producer, Andrew Loretto said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for both first-time and experienced writers to create an original piece of work to be performed on the Crucible Studio stage. It is open to writers from all backgrounds and abilities who demonstrate a passion for the city and have an interesting story to tell. We are also looking for local performers or those interested in backstage work to bring these plays to life and create a landmark theatrical event for our audiences.’

No previous experience is necessary but participants must be available for the entire rehearsal and production period. Rehearsals will be on weekday evenings and weekends during February and March 2013 with on-stage rehearsals during the week of Tuesday 2 April and performances from Monday 8 – Saturday 13 April 2013.

The deadline for writing submissions and for those interested in performing is 1.00pm Monday 15 October. The deadline for those interested in technical and production experience is Friday 14 December.
